  • A Wave of Jackpots Surges Across Québec!

Six Jackpots in Three Weeks Paid Out by Loto-Québec

Over the past three weeks, no fewer than six Lotto 6/49 and Super 7 jackpots up for grabs Canada-wide were won by Quebecers! The winnings from this extraordinary wave of luck surging across la belle province have so far totalled $91,192,405.

It all began with the April 22 Lotto 6/49 draw, when Roberval couple Léo-Georges Otis and Louiselle Harvey reaped the $8,046,090 jackpot. This was followed by the April 28 Super 7 bonus jackpot of $30,011,440 claimed by accountant Yves Dubeau from Saint-Félix-de-Valois, making him the biggest winner in Loto-Québec's history! Lady Luck then travelled to Westmount and paid a visit to Dr. Martine Maranda, a physician who won the May 3 Lotto 6/49 jackpot worth a cool $13,971,242.

Now, hot on the heels of Dr. Maranda's profitable Quick Pick are a further two winning combinations for the May 5 Super 7 bonus jackpot of $35,000,000 - again from Québec! Half the amount, a princely $17,500,000, belongs to Nancy Young, a Casino de Montréal slot machine attendant living in Sainte-Sophie, and her husband Enryck Piché. The second $17,500,000 goes to Sylvrina Hébert from Trois-Rivières and her daughter Diane Lanthier from Cap-de-la-Madeleine.

The lucky streak continued with the May 6 Lotto 6/49 draw. The $4,163,633 jackpot was once again won by a Quebecer, though it hasn't been claimed yet. As soon as it is, the total amount awarded for jackpots by Loto-Québec over this three-week period will climb to $91,192,405.

When it comes to these mega-jackpots, lottery retailers are just as keen as the winners, especially when they're the ones who sell the winning tickets! Given that they receive the equivalent of 1% of the prize, the five retailers together have earned $870,287 in commissions. As soon as the sixth prize is claimed, the sum will increase to $911,924.

This winning streak is a first in Québec's lottery history. Odds are it could happen again, given that Quebecers purchase approximately 25% of all Lotto 6/49 and Super 7 tickets sold nation-wide.

  • Super 7 Prize Won by Casino de Montréal Slot Machine Attendant and her Husband

Nancy Young, a slot machine attendant at the Casino de Montréal, and her husband, Enryck Piché, got the thrill of a lifetime by winning $17,500,000! Holding one of the two winning tickets for the May 5 Super 7 jackpot worth a whopping $35,000,000, the Sainte-Sophie couple will long remember the weekend they hardly slept, and with good reason: they were newly-minted multimillionaires!

Mr. Piché was the one who checked the tickets and, recognizing that he had the seven winning numbers, woke his sister up, who lives across the street. "I asked her to come over, because I needed someone with a clear mind. She did and told me I had all the right numbers!" He then tried repeatedly to contact Ms. Young at work, something he never does. Shocked by the news, she literally slumped to the floor. "We spent the rest of the night calling our loved ones," she explained later, somewhat more composed.

Having recently fallen in love with a house, the young couple will see their dream come true by buying it… along with two new cars. They'll also invest part of their fortune and share some of it with loved ones.

The other half of the $35,000,000 jackpot, also won in Québec, goes to Sylvrina Hébert of Trois-Rivières and her daughter Diane Lanthier of Cap-de-la-Madeleine.

The lucky Quick Pick was purchased at Dépanneur Lucette, located at 2671 Godard Street in Sainte-Sophie. The retailer will receive a commission of $175,000, which is equivalent to 1% of the prize.

  • Trois-Rivières Mother-Daughter Duo Holds One of the Two Winning Tickets for the $35,000,000 Jackpot

Sylvrina Hébert of Trois-Rivières and her daughter Diane Lanthier of Cap-de-la-Madeleine are walking on air. Together, they held one of the two winning combinations for the $35,000,000 bonus jackpot for the May 5 Super 7 draw and will now share $17,500,000! In other words, they are each $8,750,000 richer. Ms. Hébert will be splitting her prize with her six other children and her grandson: daughter Sylviane, sons Serge, Gaétan, Marcel, Aurel and Jean-Guy, as well as Éric Lanthier, who is Ms. Hébert's grandson and godson.

Diane Lanthier and her mother always buy lottery tickets when the jackpots hit record highs. Diane heard about their unbelievable win from the convenience store cashier while doing her grocery shopping. Stupefied, she ran out of the store without paying, her only thought being to tell her mother! Reacting to the news with absolute serenity, Ms. Hébert convened a family meeting. The siblings agreed to meet at Diane's place, where they found out that their mother was going to split her windfall with them! "I'm very close to my children and I'm happy to help them out." They were all thrilled and plan on celebrating the event during a family barbecue. The eldest, Marcel, is considering retiring, while Diane dreams of buying a big house and living in it with her mother. The others will let the dust settle before planning anything.

The other half of the $35,000,000 jackpot, also won by Quebecers, goes to Sainte-Sophie couple Nancy Young, a Casino de Montréal slot machine attendant, and her husband Enryck Piché.

The profitable Quick Pick was purchased at Gestion Gérard Crête, a convenience store located at 355 Barkoff Street in Trois-Rivières. The retailer will receive a commission of $175,000, which is 1% of the prize.

  • Quebec man wins $30 million in lottery, says he doesn't want to change

A 48-year-old accountant who has just pocketed more than $30 million after winning a lottery says he's not sure he's going to give any money to his siblings.

Yves Dubeau, an amateur painter for more than 20 years, quit his job Monday and said he wants to open an art gallery where his own paintings and those of his friends can be viewed. Dubeau won $30,011,440, which one Loto-Quebec spokesman called the biggest-ever payout for one person in a Canadian lottery.

Of the amount, Dubeau has decided to invest $30 million for a year, leaving him just more than $11,000 to play around with.

But the childless bachelor, who lives in St-Felix-de-Valois, about 80 kilometres northeast of Montreal, says he can always get a line of credit for his first few big buys — a diamond ring and a new car.

Although Dubeau says he wants to create a foundation to support his brother's missionary work in Africa, the brother and two sisters may not be as fortunate.

"I don't think so," Dubeau replied when asked if he would give them money.

"I have no idea. I don't think so. In the short term, I don't think so. I am the only winner."

Asked the same question later, Dubeau replied: "Usually I'm pretty generous. It's quite possible but everything will depend on my plans."

Dubeau won the Super-7 lottery on Friday and found out about the windfall as he checked the Internet on Saturday morning.

Canada's latest multimillionaire says he wants to stay the same but that it's out of his hands.

"I would like not to change," he said. "Everything will depend on people's behaviour.

"If I can continue to do what I like — painting, playing squash, going to the restaurant Saturday morning, Sunday morning, Monday morning, Tuesday morning, Wednesday morning — without getting bothered, it will be possible."

Dubeau normally spends $3 or $4 on every draw but splashed out $17 or $18 for last Friday's lottery.

He owes a debt of gratitude to an employee of the store where he put on the winning combination. The woman had to put some liquid paper on the sheet to cover some dark smudges before she could get it through.
